WOLLONGONG AND ILLAWARRA

HVAC marketing in Wollongong and the Illawarra: booked aircon quotes

A long, narrow strip between the escarpment and the sea. Mild and humid on the coast, colder on the southern flats. Fewer scorchers than Sydney, so the offer has to work harder.

The Illawarra is a thin strip. The escarpment on one side, the ocean on the other, and the suburbs strung out along the highway from Thirroul to Gerringong. That shape decides how you target ads, and the mild coastal weather decides what you say in them.

Why is HVAC marketing in Wollongong different from Sydney?

Because the northern coast is mild and humid, the southern flats get cold, and the whole region is a long line rather than a circle. Bellambi averages about 10 days a year at 30°C or more. A heatwave-only campaign runs out of reasons to buy fast here, so the offer needs to cover humidity, heating and value.

BOM long-term averages Bellambi (northern coast) Albion Park (south)
January mean maximum 25.0°C 26.9°C
Days per year at 30°C or more 10.0 19.8
Days per year at 35°C or more 2.0 4.2
July mean minimum 10.2°C 6.5°C
Days per year at 2°C or less 0.0 10.3
February 3pm relative humidity 74% 67%

Two climates in one region. The northern suburbs buy for sticky summer nights. The southern suburbs buy for cold mornings as much as hot afternoons.

What housing do Illawarra installers work in?

Mostly freestanding houses, with a solid block of units around the city centre. In the 2021 Census, 68.4% of dwellings in the Wollongong council area were separate houses, 12.2% semis and townhouses, and 18.5% flats. Two thirds of households owned their home, so most enquiries come from people who can sign off the job.

From the ABS 2021 QuickStats for Wollongong:

2021 Census Wollongong NSW
Separate house 68.4% 65.6%
Flat or apartment 18.5% 21.7%
Owned outright 34.2% 31.5%
Owned with a mortgage 32.0% 32.5%
Rented 31.0% 32.6%

Shellharbour and Kiama are separate council areas and we have not quoted figures for them here.

What do Wollongong homeowners actually buy?

Reverse cycle splits in the living area and multi-head in older coastal homes, with ducted in the newer southern estates. A post-war brick home in Corrimal or Woonona often starts with one split. A new four-bedroom build in Horsley, Flinders or Shell Cove is a ducted conversation from day one.

So the landing pages split by buyer, not just by suburb. Ads lead with ducted, replacement and whole-home systems, and we never advertise single-room splits:

  • Northern suburbs (Thirroul, Bulli, Woonona, Corrimal): whole-home multi-head and ducted where the roof allows, sold on humidity and dry mode as much as heat, plus the ESS discount on the quote where eligible.
  • Central (Figtree, Unanderra, Wollongong): ducted and multi-head in the houses, with an ownership filter tuned for the higher share of units near the city.
  • Southern growth areas (Dapto, Horsley, Albion Park, Shell Cove, Flinders, Kiama, Gerringong): ducted reverse cycle, sold as heating and cooling, with a free in-home heat-load assessment. A heat-load assessment is the site visit where the installer sizes the system from the actual rooms, windows and insulation.

How would we run Meta and Google ads in the Illawarra?

Targeting follows the strip. We would run Meta and Google Search on suburb lists in three bands, north, central and south, each with a matching landing page, rather than one radius from Wollongong that spills over the escarpment. Every enquiry answers six qualifying questions before it reaches your diary.

The build is the same air conditioning marketing system we run everywhere. The Illawarra choices:

  • Google Search. The same three bands, bidding on ducted and replacement searches such as "ducted air conditioning Shell Cove", plus breakdown searches in a hot week. No single-room split searches. The build is on Google Ads for HVAC.
  • Seasonality. A shorter cooling push from December to February, when the $4,000 minimum flips from Meta $2,500 and Google $1,500 to Google $2,500 and Meta $1,500, because people search when systems break. Then Off-Peak Fill on Meta from May with heating-led offers aimed at the southern band. Budget follows the weather instead of sitting flat all year. Our piece on how much to spend on HVAC marketing shows how to plan for that.
  • Form or page. In a smaller market, every wasted enquiry hurts. We send ads to a suburb-matched landing page with the qualifier on it, not a one-tap instant form. Why that matters is in Meta instant forms vs landing pages.
  • Offers. The ESS discount on the quote, a free heat-load assessment, and a dated install-by promise for the new estates.

Worked example: cost per booked quote in a quieter month (planning assumptions, not results)

Planning funnel at $4,000 combined spend ($2,500 Meta + $1,500 Google): $4,000 ÷ $100 to $130 blended cost per enquiry = about 35 enquiries, 60% qualify = about 21, 60% book = about 12 to 13 booked quotes. That is about $320 ad cost and about $550 all-in ($7,000 ÷ 12.5) per booked quote.

Now assume a mild month where only 10 quotes book.

Ad cost per booked quote: $4,000 ÷ 10 = $400

All-in per booked quote: ($3,000 fee + $4,000 spend) ÷ 10 = $700

Expected gross profit per booked ducted quote (planning range): $800 to $1,800

Even at 10 bookings, one ducted quote is still worth more than it costs to book, as long as a fair share of the 10 are ducted. That is why the southern band gets the ducted budget. These are assumptions to be replaced by your numbers.

Does the NSW ESS discount help Wollongong installers?

Yes. The Energy Savings Scheme discount applies across NSW as an upfront discount on the quote. Energy NSW lists it as indicative up to $550 for a new 6kW system and up to $560 when replacing an old unit with a 6kW split, with no current closing date.

In a milder market it does more work than in western Sydney. When there is no heatwave pushing people to call, "save on the quote when you replace your old system with a whole-home one" gives them a reason to enquire in a normal week.

Is the Wollongong territory available?

Yes, it is open. We take one HVAC client per service line per area, and we have no clients yet. The Illawarra is its own area. An installer who also covers the Sutherland Shire or southern Sydney can hold more than one area, quoted on the call.

FAQ

Wollongong questions

Is Wollongong too mild for aircon marketing to work?

No, but the pitch is different. BOM's Bellambi station averages about 10 days a year at 30°C or more, a lot fewer than western Sydney. So we lean less on heatwave panic and more on humidity, winter heating and the ESS discount on the quote. Summer ads still run; they just are not the whole year.

Do southern Illawarra suburbs need heating?

Yes. BOM's Albion Park (Shellharbour Airport) station averages 10.3 nights a year at 2°C or less and a July mean minimum of 6.5°C. Bellambi on the northern coast averages 10.2°C and no nights that cold. Dapto, Albion Park and the new estates around Shell Cove and Calderwood are where winter heating ads earn their keep.

Does the NSW ESS discount apply in Wollongong and Shellharbour?

Yes. The NSW Energy Savings Scheme discount applies statewide as an upfront discount on the quote. Energy NSW lists it as indicative up to $550 for a new 6kW system and up to $560 when replacing an old unit with a 6kW split, with no current closing date. In a milder market it is a useful nudge to act now.

Can one installer hold Wollongong, Shellharbour and Kiama?

At launch we treat Wollongong, Shellharbour and Kiama as one Illawarra area, with one HVAC client per service line. If you only cover the northern suburbs, we sort that on the audit call. Adding Sutherland Shire as well is a multi-area arrangement, quoted on the call with ad spend from $6,000 a month.

What results have you had in the Illawarra?

None yet. Scale Theory is new and has no clients in the Illawarra or anywhere else. We will not invent them. We can show you the system, the published price, the planning maths and exactly how we would set up the campaign, and we will publish dated case studies once real client diaries give us something to show.
