Keyword research for beginners: find what your customers search

Keyword research is the foundation of every SEO and content strategy. Get it right and you create pages people are already looking for. Get it wrong and you write into the void. Here's the simple version.

Start with your customers, not tools

List the problems your customers have and the words they'd use, not your internal jargon. "Fix a leaking tap" beats "plumbing remediation services". The best keywords sound like something a real person would actually type.

Understand search intent

  • Informational: they want to learn ("how much does SEO cost").
  • Commercial: they're comparing options ("best SEO agency Sydney").
  • Transactional: they're ready to act ("emergency electrician near me").

Match the page to the intent. A buying query needs a service page, a learning query needs an article. Mismatch that and you won't rank or convert.

Expand and validate

Use Google's autocomplete, the "People also ask" box and "related searches" to find real long-tail variations. These free sources show you exactly how people phrase things. A keyword tool then helps you gauge demand and competition.

Prioritise ruthlessly

You can't target everything. Favour terms with clear intent, reachable competition and genuine commercial value to your business. A handful of well-chosen keywords, each with its own strong page, beats a scattergun of fifty.
